Make a Shiny Glowing Glass Button
Introduction
In this tutorial you will learn how to create a Glass Glow Button in Photoshop. The pre-skills that you have to have for this tutorial is close to none. A little knowledge about Photoshop and how to use the most common tools is the only requirements really.
Step 1:
Open a new project and make it 250*250. I usually use a white OR black background to start with and this time we’re using a white one.
Step 2:
Add a new and clean layer. Now let’s make a filled black (color is optional. Go ahead and use whatever color you’d like) circle right in the center of the layer measuring 150*150 in diameter. Make sure you “center” it using the Layer->Align Layer To Selection = Horizontal AND Vertical to make sure it’s dead center. By doing this all the alignment later in the creation will be much easier to handle.
Step 3:
Now we’re going to add some effects to the circle to make sure we get some reality shading/shine later on. Double click OR right click and chose “Blending Options…” and add all the parameters as show in the panel below. You can tweak these yourself to get the lighting to look like it’s coming from another angle. This is all optional of course.
Step 4:
Now we’re going to add the “SHINE” to the actual button. Make a filled white (stick to white for best result) circle that will become our “SHINE” effect and make it 144*144 in diameter. After you have done this center the white circle accordingly to the black circle. Now we’re going to crop the circle a bit to make that true shine effect. Cut the circle as shown. You might have to align the cut circle again after cutting it as you will probably be copy and pasting it back in. Doing this sometimes throws the copied material off a bit depending on the selection you have.
After you have cut the circle and aligned it again change the Opacity of the Button Shine layer to 20%. This will make it somewhat transparent and create that glossy feeling of the black button.
Step 5:
In between the “black circle” Button layer and the Button Shine layer add a new layer with the graphics for your button. I have gone ahead and added a fast star/circle graphics to it. You can add whatever your imagination is limited to. Be creative.
Step 6:
To add that extra reality feel to the button we’re going to go ahead and create a reflection effect to the shine and glossiness of the Button. Add a new layer underneath OR above the “Button Shine” layer. In the new layer make an OVAL circle about the size you see in the picture. Select straight lines through it and delete the contents of those lines. These will make the pattern of a window in the surroundings reflected in the button. Next let’s pivot it a bit to make it look more realistic. Rotate it until you can fit it as it is in the picture.
Step 7:
Here comes the part that might get a bit tricky. Create a new layer UNDERNEATH the graphics layer. Make a new BLACK (depending on what color you chose in the Step 2) circle with the same diameter as the button itself (which is 150*150). Without de-selecting the selection, move the selection about 15 pixels up and the cut what’s inside the selection.
You should now have something looking similar to STEP 1 down below if you hold shift and press the arrow down button. Now, move the cut out part of the circle up until you see no gap between the Button and the cut circle just like in Step 2.
Step 8:
With that done now double click OR right click the cut circle layer and chose “Outer Glow” and add all the parameters as shown down below. Once again, the color of the glow is entirely up to you however the darker you make it the less it will show up in the “Glow” button.
Step 9:
Ok, now you should have a something looking like a colored glow in the button. However we still have that half circle still looming around underneath the button. To get rid of that, make a new layer underneath the glow effect layer and press CTRL+E. The layer have now been flattened and it’s easier to work with it. make a selection just around the Button in the newly flattened layer and copy the contents. Paste it out again and align the new glow layer. Delete the old Glow layer and you will have a perfect glow for your button.
Step 10:
If you now toggle the “Layer Visibility” on and off you can see the different states your buttons can be in. Depending on the colors you chose for you button and glow the result can be quite realistic. Also a bit of tweaking can make your button look like it has light sources from a range of different angles at once.
Step 11:
That is all you have to do to create a realistic glossy glow button. Of course you can play around with the shape of the button and make any shape you see fit your needs. The “Shine” circle is somewhat always the same depending on the “Bulge” level you want on the button. Play around with it and you’ll be sure to find out it’s secrets.
