30 Frighteningly Realistic CG People
Working with computer graphics has become quite easy if you know what you are doing. Texturing and adding layers upon layers of photo realistic materials is a blast once you have created the wire frame that is making up your character or object. However the modeling itself is the real hard part. If you for example are trying to create a photo realistic person with all his/her features entirely correctly modeled and textured you can be sure that you have to spend quite a lot of time in front of the computer.
Professionals learn new tricks and shortcuts each day and today, if you have a lot of money, you can use 3D scanners to grab the perfect features in just a few minutes. Texturing though is done per hand and is always fun however it is a really time consuming process that takes both skills and patience.
But once you get the result you’re after it can be quite amazing and awe inspiring. Not only do I think we’ll see more and more actors getting their own computer generated double but it can secure their legendary performances beyond their life span. Once they leave this earth their CG double can take over and make sure they keep on doing movies even though they are no longer present. Makes for a great new era in movie making don’t you think?
I’ve gathered some of the most inspiring and amazing computer generated characters/humans I have ever seen just to prove to you that what you see in movies nowadays isn’t always what you think it is. There might not be a person behind those eyes at all. Think about it…

Really it doesn’t, none of these images look remotely ‘real’
And as far as getting them to create emotional performances that an audience can engage with? Not likely! Why when many many humans work so hard to be actors and only a few really succeed do you think some rendered version is going to? When you look into the eyes of a great actor you see the intent & emotion.. THAT is what makes them great!

Obviously, you have never heard of Shrek or any other CG movie that was a hit. A story is a story. Any medium will work if it is done right.

Funny you say that none of these images look remotely “real” there is ONE real person among this selection that I asume was included here due the fact it is in a portfolio in CGSociety, but it is a real one with a CG background.
And believe me.. there are CG characters that can act much better than real people. (thanks heaven for the animators!!)

What do we need actor’s for? Just generate them with CG and skip all the union hassles and the soap opera of working with real people with real attitudes…
Speaking of which, can someone make me a CG copy of Lindsay Lohan just before she went all nuts… something interactive and 3D… oh, and it’s got to be full body – head to toe, with clothing options. ;D

All I can say is what amazing talent. Most of them I could not even tell that they were computer generated. The first one I saw that stopped me in my tracks was “Jessica Biel” by Desiree Lunsford. She has the eye for making that piece look so realistic. She stood out from the other pieces of artwork. I seriously stared at it for a really long time and could not see one flaw, it was like a photgraph . It just so astonishes me how the hair, shadows, highlights looks so realistic. Actors would never have to worry about getting old you can just have the computer generated actor for up-close shots. How you do that on the computer is just so amazing. It just blows my mind what people can create on the computer. What is next for the world of art? Only time will tell us what new world art will be coming to us. People have such creative minds and can use the future of technology to create new kind of art.

The one of Johnny Depp looks incredibly real. I would not even think about it being CG if I would’ve seen it in a different context.
My 2nd favorite is the Old Black Guy. Fantastic work, thanks for the find
